Federal Immigration Crackdown Hits Raleigh Communities
Immigration crackdown has also spread to Raleigh, North Carolina, which has increased the fear of the immigrant communities. The operation, which started in Charlotte over the weekend, has resulted in more than 130 arrests, and now the state capital has become the new target. Most immigrant residents, especially in Cary, where many foreign-born individuals live, have responded with fear. Businesses shut down, and streets emptied.
Wake County Federal Agents
Raleigh Mayor Janet Cowell verified that they saw Border Patrol agents in the Counties of Wake and Durham that contain the state capital and the city of Durham. Although the scale and duration of the operation is not clear, the local authorities have encouraged residents to call the police in case they feel insecure. At one of the meetings of the City Council, Mayor Cowell reminded all people to be kind to their neighbors in these tense times. The mayor’s appeal for peace contradicts the federal government’s statement that the crackdown is necessary to curb crime, while local leaders argue that crime rates have decreased in both Raleigh and Charlotte.
Raleigh Suburb Shaken with Immigration Agents
The suburb of Cary where almost 20 percent of the population was born outside the U.S. soon became the center of concern. The Asian community that has expanded dramatically since the 90s experienced a panic when one of the residents filmed Border Patrol agents arresting four workers. The video that has been distributed across social media has brought a lot of distress.
Local companies, especially the ethnic restaurants such as the Mexican, Indian and Chinese restaurants, went as far as closing down. Esmeralda Angel, the owner of a family-owned restaurant, said that closing down resulted in a financial loss, but she saw it as the safer choice given the federal presence.
Congresswoman denounces the Crackdown
U.S. Rep. Valerie Foushee, representing Durham and its suburbs, was strongly critical of the federal operation, terming it a gross abuse of power and a breach of civil rights. She emphasized that such measures were an insult to democracy particularly in an area where the South Asian population is increasing with many of them working in the high-tech industry of the Research Triangle.
Satish Garimella, pro tempore mayor of Morrisville, a town nearby Raleigh, shared such fears. He emphasized that the community was too scared, and people should carry identification to prevent unjustified arrest.
Crackdowns on Immigration Nationwide
The participation of North Carolina in this federal operation is not something that many people expected. Although the state has a long history of split government, having a Democratic governor and a Republican-dominated legislature, the recent measures of the Trump administration to promote more rigid immigration policies have resulted in an increased activity in such spheres as Portland, Oregon, and Los Angeles, where arrests have been considerable.
Critics believe that the attention given to North Carolina, which has not experienced significant protests against federal policies, highlights a larger national debate on immigration and crime, which have become the key topics of the White House.
A State at Crossroads on Immigration Enforcement
Sanctuary policies in North Carolina have become national news due to controversy. Although the policies of the Mecklenburg and Wake counties were to non-cooperate with federal immigration authorities, new state legislation has compelled the regions to comply with so-called detainers, requests by federal authorities to detain immigrants in case of their federal detention. Some local officials have responded negatively to this change of policy citing reasons of family separation and unfair detentions. Matt Mercer of the North Carolina Republican Party has justified the crackdown, stating that the measures show how radical Democrat failures are being addressed.
Remarks
The panic that immigrant communities in Raleigh and other areas are feeling is evident as the operation spreads. Uncertainty and anxiety have become the new reality of many due to the loss of the feeling of safety, belonging, and peace. The question is; how many?
